My MP3 Player? Videos and Music!!?

For Christmas I just got an spi mp3 player and im confused. I put videos on the player and it says unknown format-same with the music. I converted the videos to avi. -what encoding would work so it wouldn't be an unknown format? How do I convert the music to mp3. ?i
