Timing on a 1998 4 cyl. chevy malibu?

Changed water pump and when I got everything back together I think I messed the timing chain up. It ran for a short time then died and won't start now. I have used the Haynes book to try and get it back in time but it isn't firing. The timing chain is turning tho. What can I do now?
