Arrested couple are known Child Traffickers. Madeleines fate maybe?

Something isn't right here. This couple are child traffickers but they're up in court today to hear charges of extortion. To be trying to extort the reward money, they must be misleading the McCanns that they have information about Madeleine, right? Does this mean the police have ruled out that child traffickers are involved then? If they haven't, how do they know the information from this couple is false? Yet again there's something we're not being told here.
