Has my ipod reached its' demise?!?

well i got it out of my backpack to charge it and i turned it on and it went to that stupid diagnostics thing so i was about to reset it when the screen starting fading out. so i figured it was dying so i plugged it in and nothing is happening. itunes doesn't recognize it as a device. it's plugged in right now and nothing is happening. i'm pressing ons and nothing is happening. it's a ipod nano. the old, old ones. the 2GB ones.
