Birkenstocks... do they rock or totally suck?

My "hippie friend" out in San Fran tells me that Birkenstocks are the shizzle. They're totally "rad" or whatever. What are they? I've probably never even seen a pair of 'em in my life... are they made of cork and tree bark? LOL ... I'd love to know.
